Best Time to Visit Tanzania: Month-by-Month Guide

There is no single "best time" to visit Tanzania. The right moment depends on what you want to see, what you want to pay, and how you feel about crowds. This month-by-month guide breaks down weather, wildlife, pricing, and crowd levels so you can choose the perfect window for your safari.

The Two Seasons That Matter

Tanzania does not have four seasons in the European sense. It has two:

• Dry season (June to October): Warm days, cool mornings, virtually no rain. The Great Migration is in the northern Serengeti. This is peak safari season.
• Green season (November to May): Lush landscapes, calving season, lower prices, fewer tourists. Rainfall varies by month and region.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January – February: Calving Season

The short dry spell between the two rainy seasons. Over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born in the Ndutu region of the southern Serengeti. Predator activity is intense — lions, cheetahs, and hyenas hunt the vulnerable young. This is one of the most dramatic wildlife events in Africa. Birdwatching is exceptional with migratory species present.

March – April: The Long Rains

The heavy rains begin. Roads become challenging, some camps in remote areas close, and prices drop to their lowest. This is the quietest time to visit. For travellers on a budget who do not mind the rain, the green landscapes are stunning and you may have entire parks to yourself.

May: End of the Long Rains

Rains begin to ease. The southern and western Serengeti start to dry out. Some camps reopen. Prices remain low. Good for photography with dramatic skies and green backgrounds.

June: The Dry Season Begins

Premium season opens. The migration moves north through the central Serengeti. Vegetation thins, making wildlife easier to spot. Temperatures are pleasant with warm days and cool mornings. Popular camps begin to fill.

July – August: Peak Season

The Great Migration reaches the northern Serengeti and begins crossing the Mara River into Kenya (though some herds stay in Tanzania). This is the most dramatic wildlife spectacle in the world. The Serengeti is busy, the weather is perfect, and prices are at their highest. Book 9–12 months ahead.

September: Migration in Full Swing

Many herds cross back from Kenya into the northern Serengeti. The Mara River crossings continue. The dry landscape concentrates animals around water sources. Excellent for predator sightings.

October: Season Wind-Down

The short rains begin in late October. The migration starts moving south. Crowds thin, prices drop slightly, and the landscape begins to green up. A shoulder month that offers good value.

November: Short Rains

The short rains arrive but are typically lighter and more intermittent than the long rains. Most camps remain open. The Serengeti is quiet and green. A good budget month with pleasant conditions.

December: Festive Season and Calving

The rains ease and the migration heads south toward the Ndutu region for calving. Christmas and New Year see a price spike and higher demand. Book early if travelling over the holidays. The short grass plains of the southern Serengeti offer excellent wildlife viewing.

• Big Five viewing: Year-round, best June to October

Shoulder Season: The Sweet Spot
