The Big Five: Where to Spot Each One in Tanzania

The term "Big Five" was coined by big-game hunters to describe the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and buffalo. Today, it is the wildlife viewing checklist that brings most safari travellers to East Africa. Tanzania is one of the best places on Earth to see all five — and the Ngorongoro Crater is the only place where you can realistically see all of them in a single day.

1. Lion — The King of the Serengeti

Tanzania has the largest lion population in Africa, estimated at over 20,000. The Serengeti alone supports over 3,000 lions. They are the easiest of the Big Five to spot — prides are often found resting near roads, particularly in the Seronera area of the Serengeti.

Best places to see lions:

• Seronera, central Serengeti — year-round, highest density
• Ngorongoro Crater — relaxed prides on the crater floor
• Lake Manyara — famous tree-climbing lions
• Northern Serengeti — prides near the Mara River during migration season

Best time: Year-round. Lions are most active at dawn and dusk. During the calving season (January–March), pride hunting activity intensifies.

2. Leopard — The Elusive Phantom

Leopards are the most sought-after of the Big Five and, in most parks, the hardest to find. But Tanzania has a secret weapon: the Seronera area of the Serengeti has the highest leopard density in Africa. A single sausage tree along the Seronera River can host three or four individuals. Finding a leopard requires a skilled guide and a bit of patience.

Best places to see leopards:

• Seronera River, central Serengeti — the best leopard viewing in Africa
• Ngorongoro Crater — occasionally spotted in the Lerai forest
• Lake Manyara — in the groundwater forest
• Tarangire — along the river corridor

Best time: Year-round. Early morning game drives along the Seronera River offer the highest chances.

3. Elephant — Giants of Tarangire

African elephants are widespread in Tanzania, but the largest concentrations are found in Tarangire National Park, which hosts over 3,000 elephants — the highest density of any park in East Africa. During the dry season, herds of 200 or more gather along the Tarangire River in scenes that are truly spectacular.

Best places to see elephants:

• Tarangire National Park — largest herds, up to 200+ in dry season
• Serengeti — large bull elephants along the Seronera and Grumeti Rivers
• Ngorongoro Crater — impressive bulls in the Lerai forest
• Arusha National Park — accessible elephant herds near Momella Lakes

Best time: June to October for concentrated herds at Tarangire. Year-round elsewhere.

4. Black Rhino — Ngorongoro's Greatest Treasure

The black rhino is critically endangered, with fewer than 6,000 remaining in the wild. The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the last strongholds for this species in East Africa, with approximately 25 individuals living within the crater walls. Seeing a black rhino here is one of the great privileges of African safari travel.

Best places to see black rhinos:

• Ngorongoro Crater — approximately 25 individuals, near-guaranteed sighting
• Serengeti — very rare,偶尔 spotted in the northern areas
• Elsewhere in Tanzania — extremely rare and unpredictable

Best time: Year-round in Ngorongoro. The crater floor's open grasslands make rhinos relatively easy to locate.

5. Buffalo — The underestimated Giant

African buffalo are the most numerous of the Big Five but also one of the most dangerous. They are unpredictable, have no natural fear of humans, and travel in large herds that can number in the hundreds. In Tanzania, buffalo are found in all major parks. The Ngorongoro Crater has some of the largest individuals, with massive horn spans.

Best places to see buffalo:

• Ngorongoro Crater — large herds on the crater floor
• Serengeti — widespread, particularly around Seronera
• Tarangire — along the river corridor
• Lake Manyara — in the groundwater forest

Best time: Year-round. Buffalo are the easiest of the Big Five to find.
